Welcome to my studio, the place where I live with my images, my thoughts, and my dreams.

My name is Merethe Torbergsen, and this blog is about my art. I am in the process of establishing a small business built around my artwork, with an online shop as the first step. As part of this journey, I want to create a blog that gives insight into the process leading up to a finished work. I will share the stories behind my motifs, the techniques I use, and the ups and downs that are part of the journey. Perhaps also a little more about myself — the different aspects of this creative business, and who I am.

I have been drawing all my life. I am self-taught, with a strong curiosity when it comes to materials and techniques. I am driven by exploration, and by a desire to master a wide range of techniques and visual expressions.

At the moment, my work is primarily focused on drawing, using charcoal, graphite, and pastel pencils. The motifs I explore are largely centered around the human figure, first and foremost the woman. The drawings are grounded in realism, yet often infused with subtle surreal elements. My approach is deeply personal and emotional, and I feel that there's a part of me within each piece.

I have been taking a course in oil painting — something I have wanted to pursue for a long time and finally got around to do. The course focuses on portrait painting, where I am learning both classical drawing and painting techniques, as well as more experimental approaches to portraiture. It is incredibly inspiring and enjoyable, and I am very much looking forward to spending more time working in oil paints in the future.

Beyond drawing and oil painting, I also explore watercolours, ink, markers, acrylic paint, and coloured pencils. I take great pleasure in getting to know the different materials, and I plan to experiment more with combining several mediums within a single piece. In other words, there is plenty to keep me busy — and all of this is something I want to share with others.

I am not entirely sure what shape this blog will take yet — I suppose it will reveal itself as I go. Perhaps fewer people read long-form texts these days, but I have a lot on my mind, and I hope some of you will find joy in following my journey.

There you go, this is the start! There is so much ahead, and I am truly excited to move forward and bring my plans to life.
